IWB Troubleshooting

IWB Disaster Plan or IWB Worst Case Scenerio or Help! The IWB isn’t working!

Howard BreretonHoward Brereton says . . .

Problems with technology can and will occur! The main thing to remember is “DON’T PANIC!” and the next thing to remember is that you probably don’t need to call for emergency help either.

A few simple checks may help get you on your way. All IWB systems have full instructions on their use attached to the computer cabinet or near to the board.

Please take the time to read these if you are unfamiliar with the system. Now let’s consider some possible problems

  • Nothing seems to be working.

Is there power? Is the system switched on at the wall? If so, do the mains sockets work? (try plugging something else in to check). Sometimes classrooms temporarily have no power.

  • I can’t see anything on the screen.

Is the projector switched on? If not, switch on with remote control and check that the projector is set to the correct input. See printed instructions in the teaching room.

  • I can’t log in.

Are you logged in correctly? (see instructions in the room) Note to Didsbury IWB users only - always tick ‘workstation only’ box first, then ‘user name’ is the room name (i.e. behrens21), ‘password’ is Didsbury (all lower case no spaces).
  • I have picture but no sound.

Check the knob on the front of the amplifier (it switches sound from PC to Video/DVD)
  • I need to use my USB memory stick.

Please check before your teaching session and contact Media Services if there is no front USB port. Please don’t try to dismantle the security
    cabinets!
  • I can’t log in as ‘myself’.

All IWBs can access the internet - so try the MMU self service portal
www.mmu.ac.uk/self; you can access your ‘H’ drive files without
    logging on.

Most importantly, have a back up of your files on floppy/CD/OHT; there always needs to be some kind of fallback where technology is concerned.

And finally . . .
