Welcome from the Dean

The Institute of Education (IOE) is one of eight faculties in the university and one of the UK's leading, internationally recognised, educational centres.

Recent Success

Over the last ten years, the Institute has expanded from its long-established initial teacher training focus and developed successful provision in Education Studies, Youth and Community Work, Early Years and Childhood Studies, Urban Education, Careers Guidance and Counselling, Education and Business Management Leadership, Educational Research (including research training) and international activity. The Primary PGCE and BA (QTS) as well as the Secondary PGCE have won the highest possible praise from OfSTED who judged these programmes to be 'Outstanding' in the 2011 Inspection.

Leading centre for research

The Institute's Education and Social Research Institute (ESRI) consolidated its status in the national Research Assessment Exercise (2007) by being placed 7th in the UK for quality of applied educational research and evaluation with much of its work classed as 'world leading'. Recent research sponsors include the Education and Social Research Council, the Nuffield Foundation, the Gatsby Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the DfES, the European Union, the General Teaching Council for England, Barclays, Microsoft and Siemens/Lego.

Delivering government objectives

The Institute of Education has won major contracts to deliver the national School Business Managers programmes and develop their national training materials as well as a tender to deliver the DfES 'Safety for Children' programmes. Additionally, significant funding has been won from the Children's Workforce Development Council to run the Early Years Professional Status project. The North West Regional Science Learning Centre on the Didsbury campus continues to have great success in gaining funding to transform approaches to science teaching and learning.

Strategic Partnerships

Strategic partnerships allow the IOE to make a major and proactive contribution in all aspects of the education and training of the whole school and children's workforces. Our partnership schools, colleges and service providers share with us a commitment to high quality training to ensure all who teach, support and develop young people can play a key role in raising standards and improving their life chances. We also maintain strong relations with the City of Manchester, Cheshire East Council and the wider North West region through education, enterprise and community projects with a multi-professional focus.

We hope you will visit us at Didsbury in Manchester or at Crewe in Cheshire to meet staff and students and to see the Institute of Education in person. We are confident you will discover at the Institute an exceptional community of learners and a supportive environment in which to pursue your studies.
