The Faculty of Education at MMU is a leading UK centre for educational research and study It is the major provider of initial teacher education and training continuing professional development in the northwest and is one of the largest teacher education establishments in the country.

The Faculty is based on two campuses, Birley (Manchester) and Crewe (Cheshire) and has a distinctive reputation for providing high quality learning experiences at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Teacher Training and Professional Education

The Faculty of Education provides various routes leading to Qualified Teacher Status, including an honours degree in primary education (three years full-time), a one year PGCE (postgraduate) in Primary Education and a wide range of one year PGCE Secondary subject options.

Our Primary PGCE and BA (QTS) programmes have won high praise from OfSTED who judged them to be 'Outstanding in the 2011 Inspection', identifying the key strengths as:

  • Strong support from mentors and tutors for trainees' personal, academic and professional needs,
  • Innovative units of study and option courses,
  • The high value given to the trainee voice in promoting higher-qualify provision,
  • The effective use of schools with specialist expertise,
  • The critical reflection shown by leaders and managers, mirrored in trainees' development as thinking practitioners,
  • Trainees' employability.

Both BA and PGCE Primary Education programmes are available at either our Birley or Crewe Campus (applicants may only apply to one location). A number of PGCE Secondary subjects are offered at both campuses.

There are also potential PGCE routes into teaching available for those who already have graduate status or equivalent prior learning or experience.

For applicants who want a broader grounding in Education, the Faculty offers three year degrees in Education Studies, Early Years and Childhood Studies and Youth and Community Work. Education Studies is also offered as a route within the combined honours degree programme at the Crewe Campus. It is possible to progress from these degrees (subject to holding the requisite entry requirements) into a PGCE or another professional field in education, business, public service or the voluntary sector.

Research

The Faculty houses the Educational and Social Research Institute (ESRI), which is an important and expanding centre of excellence in educational research and evaluation, with a thriving research community.

It is committed to research-enriched professional practice and aims to offer the best and most innovative approaches to research-informed professionalism in the UK, across a growing range of professional areas. It received the highest grading of any of the new universities in the last research Assessment Exercise, and its research degree training is recognised by the Economic and research Council (ESRC). Its research degrees programmes attract students with a wide range of interests from the UK and overseas.

International work

International links are fostered through numerous European Union sponsored programmes and projects. The Faculty also runs summer schools for international students and hosts customised study visits for groups of overseas educators. The Education and Social Research Institute plays a major role in international research alliances and is led by a team of senior staff who enjoy international distinction as educationists and who are in regular demand as speakers, advisors and consultants on the world stage.
